What Is a Blanket Washing Unit?
A blanket washing unit is an integrated cleaning system found in many modern printing presses. Its primary role is to automatically clean the blanket cylinder while the machine is either running at slow speed or stopped between jobs. By using a combination of cleaning cloths or rollers and solvents, the unit removes contaminants that would otherwise degrade print quality or cause downtime.

In simple terms: it wipes the slate clean—literally—so your next run starts fresh.

Why It Matters
Even a small buildup on the blanket can distort an image, introduce ghosting, or leave streaks that compromise the final product. Regular manual cleaning can be time-consuming and inconsistent. The blanket washing unit automates this essential process, providing consistency, speed, and safety.

Types of Systems
Blanket washing systems vary depending on the press type and size, but most use one of the following:

Cloth-based units, where a roll of special cleaning cloth, soaked with solvent or water-based cleaner, wipes the blanket.

Brush or roller units, which use mechanical scrubbing with solvent to achieve deeper cleaning.

Spray systems, where cleaning fluids are misted onto the blanket and then wiped or dried.

Advanced systems may include programmable cycles, solvent recycling, and automatic detection of blanket contamination levels.
